Epimedium, also known as barrenwort, bishop's hat, fairy wings, horny goat weed, rowdy lamb herb, randy beef grass or yin yang huo, is a genus of flowering plants in the family Berberidaceae. There are about 50 species, the majority of which are endemic to China.
Epimedium species are deciduous or evergreen hardy perennials. The majority have four-parted "spider-like" flowers in spring.
The plant contains icariin, which is a PDE5 inhibitor like sildenafil, the active ingredient of Viagra. It is therefore used as an aphrodisiac and a treatment for erectile dysfunction.
Horny Goat Weed has been used by Chinese herbalists for centuries to restore sexual desire,
boost erectile function, reduce fatigue and even alleviate menopausal discomfort.
The Chinese consider horny goat weed a top libido-lifter for men and women, and a
top aid to erectile function in men.
Maca root, Mucuna seed, and Polypodium leaf are added to enhance the synergistic
effect of Horny Goat Weed. Research has shown Horny Goat Weed can inhibit an
enzyme called acetylcholinesterase (AChE). By inhibiting AChE, Horny Goat Weed
supports higher levels of the key cholinergic neurotransmitters associated with
sexual arousal.
